Nathan approached us in mid-January with the ingenious idea of dropping down on one knee to his loving girlfriend, Carol, at the Diamond Beach by Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon.
We really liked the idea of popping the question with a diamond ring amidst huge ice diamonds, yet pulling off a surprise proposal in Iceland is nothing close to an easy task, so in the one and a half months that followed we went into some intensive planning, every single detail from itinerary to contingency.
Upon arrival the couple was given a very warm welcome at the Blue Lagoon, some much needed pampering after long flights. We also arranged a table for the couple at the LAVA Restaurant, a beautifully designed restaurant built into a stunning lava cave! There they had a great selection of fresh Icelandic produce, seafood (that creamy langoustine soup!), beets and roots cooked salad, and Icelandic lamb cooked to perfection
On the next day, we took the love birds onto a private tour around the Golden Circle, taking our time to fully explore Thingvellir National Park, watched the Geysir hot spring erupt, and the Gullfoss Waterfall cascade.
In the evening, we went on a private super jeep hunt for the elusive northern lights. A successful hunt took more than just the basic requirements of partially clear dark sky and solar wind activity, but also the guide’s expertise on finding locations that provides a better chance, and a good dose of patience and luck. We were so stoked that our persistence paid off , we managed to catch the aurora dance swirling across the sky!
We took the days after to explore the south coast, the spectacular Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss waterfalls, Reynisfjara black beach, Eldhraun lava field etc. Being shown a vast variety of landscape in Iceland, Carol was completely oblivious to the fact that she was soon going to be asked a very important question!
We departed our hotel on the South Coast early in the morning to get to the Diamond Beach just when the sun was rising above the sea. We also arranged our very own in-house professional photographer to capture this special moment too! Nathan skillfully led Carol into the frame on the black beach dotted with ice diamond glitter. Blown away by the surreal scene, and the love of her life down on one knee with beautiful ring in front of her, we heard a gleeful “Yes!”. And the kodak moment was captured.
In Iceland we are blessed with quite an abundance of ice to keep things cool, and no celebration is complete without some bubblies! So we brought the newly-engaged a bottle of champagne kept chilled by ice over 1,000 years old!
As we head back towards Reykjavik, our photographer caught the dramatic light and cloud formation near one of the the tongue glaciers of Vatnajokull. So we seized the opportunity to add one more bonus photo-shoot for the love birds, rounding up the epic Iceland experience for them.
