We start the day taking an eastward direction from Reykjavik into Iceland’s central highlands. The first notable landmark we will see is Mount Hekla, which carries the name of Gateway to Hell. Despite its is average height at 1491m, the volcano is famous due to its frequent activity. 10% of the tephra created in Iceland in the last thousand years has come from Hekla, amounting to 5 km3. The volcano has produced one of the largest volumes of lava of any in the world in the last millennium, around 8 km3. We will take a stop at lava fields so we can get a closer encounter to this volcano’s creation.
We then drive through Domadalur, Valley of the Doom. In the warmer months the valley is covered with green moss and black volcanic ash, creating stark contrast on the valley’s contours. At the end of the Valley we will find Frostarstadavatn, a beautiful lake lined with black sandy shore where lava field runs into it. From here we will also see the silica-rich multicolored rhyolite mountains.
After that we head towards Landmannalaugar, where we not only find more colorful rhyolite mountains, but also the natural hot spring in the highlands. The mixing of several hot water streams from the edge of Laugahraun lava field together with streams of cold water create a little river with very comfortable temperature of around 36-40?C even in the midst of a snowy winter. Remember to have your bathing suits with you!
When we have finished enjoying the bath or a short hike in the area, we will move on to Ljotipollur, which means ugly puddle in Icelandic. Contrary to its unappealing name, the turquoise-colored still lake is surrounded with crimson red slopes, making it quite a surreal scene.
Before we head back to Reykjavik we also make a stop at Hjalparfoss, which is a beautiful 2-step waterfall where rivers Fossá and Þjórsá join.
