During the winter months from mid-September to late March, when there is complete darkness in the sky, we get the chance to see the awesome display of Northern Lights. The Northern Lights, also known as Aurora Borealis, is created when the upper atmosphere of the earth is sufficiently disturbed by particles in solar wind from the Sun. The level of ionisation and excitation of different components in the atmosphere orchestrate light shows of varying colors and complexity. The phenomenal display of colors from greenish yellow to beautiful shades of blue, red, pink, purple or even white is a sight that is unforgettable. Iceland is one of the few countries that are situated close enough to the polar region where you can see the Aurora at KP strength (from 0 to 9) level 3 and above virtually anywhere in the country with clear sky.
We leave the light of the city in the evening on this approximately four-hour tour and head out into the dark night in our jeeps. Our jeeps are specially modified for the wild Icelandic terrain, which allows us to on unpaved roads where needed. We search for the best locations to view this fabulous solar display swirling in the sky in a symphony of magical colours and shapes.
